Yacht Wedding Photography in Abu Dhabi: Best Spots, Light and Drone Rules

Wedding Yacht Abu Dhabi Team·
Two views of the 68 Ft Super Yacht: the dark-hulled bow with foredeck sunpads on turquoise water, and the stern with its aft sunpad, teak swim platform and UAE flag at a marina

The best yacht wedding photographs in Abu Dhabi come from five positions on the boat, three or four backdrops on the water, and one hour of light: the last hour before sunset. Drones add a sixth angle, but flying one in the UAE needs registration and permission that your photographer must hold, and the captain has the final say on whether one launches from the deck. This guide is written for couples briefing a photographer and for photographers who have not shot on a boat before, and it covers the spots, the light, the timing and the drone question honestly.

The five positions on the boat

The bow

The foredeck is the portrait position. On a motor yacht like the 68 Ft Super Yacht or the 62 Ft Tecno Yacht it is a wide, uncluttered deck with the rail curving to a point and nothing but water ahead. The couple stands at the bow rail, the photographer shoots from the flybridge or the saloon roof looking down and forward, and the skyline is behind them. On the house boats the equivalent is the grass foredeck with the glass saloon behind.

The flybridge or upper deck

The highest point on the boat gives the overhead of the ceremony, the aisle and the guests, which is the most shared photograph from any boat wedding. It also gives the photographer a clean angle down onto the couple at the bow.

The aft deck

The stern is where the wake is, and a shot of the couple at the aft rail with the boat's wake and the Corniche receding is one that no land venue can produce. The teak swim platform on the motor yachts is a second, lower position for a seated portrait at water level.

The saloon, shot from outside

Every boat in the fleet has a glass-walled saloon. At blue hour, with the interior lights on, the photographer stands on deck and shoots through the glass: the couple lit inside, the skyline reflected in the window. It is the best indoor photograph on a boat and it takes thirty seconds to set up.

The marina pontoon and the gangway

Before boarding, the boat itself is the backdrop. The couple on the pontoon with the boat behind, and the step across the gangway hand in hand, are the opening frames of the album.

The backdrops on the water

  • The Corniche skyline from off the breakwater: Etihad Towers and the line of the city, best from the middle of the afternoon onward when the sun is behind the camera.
  • Emirates Palace from the water in front of it: the domes and the palm-lined shore, warm in late light.
  • Lulu Island: anchoring on its city side gives the whole skyline across a stretch of calm water, the widest backdrop of all.
  • Saadiyat and the Louvre Abu Dhabi dome: a quieter, more architectural backdrop, reached on a longer charter.
  • The mangroves: green channels and still water for a soft, natural frame with no buildings at all.
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is visible from the water at a distance on some routes; it reads as a white line on the horizon rather than a close backdrop, so do not plan the album around it.

The captain chooses the exact anchorage on the day for shelter and light. Tell us which backdrop matters most and we will plan the route for it; the six routes are described on the wedding yacht service page.

The light, hour by hour

  • Late morning to mid-afternoon: hard overhead sun, deep shadows under hats and brows, and a white glare off the water and the deck. Shoot in the shade of the bimini or inside the saloon, and save the deck for later.
  • The last hour before sunset: the light that every yacht wedding is timed for. Warm, low, soft, with the water turning gold. Vows at forty-five minutes before sunset, portraits in the last thirty.
  • Blue hour, the half hour after sunset: deep blue sky, city lights on, the boat's own string lights and deck lighting showing. The cake cutting, the saloon through the glass and the couple at the rail with the skyline lit.
  • Full night: the boat becomes the light source. Portraits against the lit deck, long exposures of the skyline from anchor, and the return past the Corniche.

A photographer who has not shot at sea should know that the boat moves, slightly, even at anchor. Faster shutter speeds than on land, and a moment's patience while the crew settle the boat before the ceremony, solve it.

Drones: what to know before anyone flies

A drone gives the one photograph the boat cannot: the whole yacht from above, the couple on the bow, the wake and the skyline in one frame. It is also the part of wedding photography most likely to go wrong in Abu Dhabi if it is not arranged properly.

  • Flying a drone in the UAE requires the operator to be registered and to hold permission for the flight. Your photographer or drone operator is responsible for holding it; our team does not arrange drone permits.
  • Some areas of the city and coast are restricted, and rules change. Ask your operator to confirm the current requirements for the date and the route before you promise yourselves the shot.
  • The captain has the final say on whether a drone launches from and lands on the boat, based on wind, other vessels and the safety of guests on deck.
  • A drone launch takes deck space and quiet. Plan it for the portraits, at anchor, not during the ceremony.

If a drone is not possible on your date, the flybridge overhead and the bow shot from the upper deck give most of the same feeling from on board.

Practical points for the booking

  • The photographer and any assistant count toward the boat's capacity. A 16-guest boat with a photographer on board takes 15 guests.
  • Book the photographer for the charter plus forty-five minutes: the pontoon frames before departure and the last frames on the gangway afterwards.
  • Send the photographer the boat page in advance. Every page has photographs of the decks, so they arrive knowing the positions.
  • Ask the crew, not the couple, for a boat position change. The captain will swing the boat for a backlit portrait when asked.
  • The decoration, part of the package price, is set before boarding; ask the photographer to shoot the empty dressed deck first. See the decoration page for what is set.

Boats that photograph best

  • 68 Ft Super Yacht, 16 guests. A dark hull that reads dramatically against the water, a wide foredeck with sunpads for the bow portraits and a teak aft platform at water level.
  • 62 Ft Tecno Yacht, 18 guests. A white flybridge yacht with a bow sunpad and wooden chairs; the flybridge gives the overhead and the bow gives the skyline.
  • Lavy Luxury Yacht, 30 guests. Two decks with a glass-walled lounge that shoots beautifully from outside at blue hour.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide a photographer?

No. The package covers the boat, crew, decoration and cake. You bring your own photographer, and we brief them on the boat and the route.

Can the photographer come on a second boat for exterior shots?

Yes, on a separate charter cruising in company, which gives the full-length shots of your boat under way. Ask on WhatsApp and we will suggest the pairing.

Is the light better in winter or summer?

Winter has an early, soft sunset and clear air; summer has a later sunset and more haze, which softens the sun. Both photograph well if the ceremony is timed to the last hour of light.

Can we do a portrait session on a different day from the wedding?

Yes. A two-hour charter for the couple and the photographer alone, timed to sunset, is a popular way to get the portraits without the guests.

Brief your photographer

Send your date, boat and the backdrop you want on WhatsApp to +971 50 503 7702 and we will send the route, the sunset time and the positions on the boat. The full picture of what the package includes is on the wedding yacht service page, and all thirteen boats are on the fleet page.
