Weather planning for a yacht wedding in Abu Dhabi comes down to three variables: wind, heat and sea state. Heat you can design around with timing and shade. Wind you manage with the route, the decoration and a few habits on deck. Sea state is the captain's call, and on the sheltered water along the Corniche, the mangroves and Lulu Island it is calm far more often than not. The three variables and who owns them

• Heat: yours to plan. Departure time, shade, drinks and a boat with an air-conditioned interior solve almost all of it.
• Wind: shared. The captain chooses where the boat sits so the wind runs along the deck rather than across it; you choose decoration and a hairstyle that can cope.
• Sea state: the captain's. If the water is not safe or comfortable, the captain changes the route or the timing, and the team confirms the decision with you on WhatsApp.

Wind: what it does and how to handle it

Wind is the variable people underestimate. Even a light breeze feels stronger on a moving deck, and a few days each season bring a genuine northerly that makes the open water choppy.

On the deck

• Weight everything. Table runners, menus, place cards and signage all need to be fixed or weighted. The decoration team uses ties and weights as standard; tell them if you are adding paper items of your own.
• Choose florals that are secured to the structure of the boat: rails, arch frames and the aft table. Loose vases on side tables are the first thing to go.
• Keep candles in glass hurricanes or use flameless ones. Open flames and wind do not mix.

On the couple

• A long veil is beautiful in photographs and difficult on deck. Pin it, choose a shorter one, or plan to remove it after the ceremony.
• Hair that is fully up or fully secured survives; loose curls do not.
• Lightweight fabrics move well in wind; very full skirts catch it.

On the route

The captain will keep the boat in the lee of the island when it is breezy. From Al Bateen Marina, that means the water along the Corniche toward Emirates Palace. From Yas Marina, the channels around Yas Island and toward Saadiyat. Open water crossings are shortened or skipped on windy days.

Heat: design the day around it

From October to April, heat on deck is comfortable to warm. From May to September it is the deciding factor. Either way, the tools are the same:

1. Depart late. The last hour of daylight and the first hour after dark are the most comfortable. In summer, depart after sunset entirely.
2. Book shade. A house boat canopy or a yacht with a covered aft deck. Ask the team which part of your boat is shaded at the hour you will be on the water; the sun moves and so does the shade.

Sea state: why it is usually calm, and what happens when it is not

Abu Dhabi's wedding routes are mostly inside a ring of islands and breakwaters. The Corniche waterfront, the channels near Lulu Island and the mangroves are sheltered water where the boat sits almost flat at anchor. The open sea toward Saadiyat is more exposed, which is why it is beautiful on calm days and skipped on windy ones.

House boats are the steadiest platforms in the fleet: their wide, flat hulls barely move at anchor, which makes them the natural choice for a ceremony on deck. Yachts are more responsive, which most guests enjoy while cruising and hardly notice once the captain holds position.

When the sea is rougher than the captain is comfortable with, three things can happen, in this order:

• The route changes to sheltered water and the plan continues.
• The departure shifts by an hour or two to let conditions settle.

The captain's call: how it actually works

The captain and crew are on every charter, and the captain is the only person who decides whether and where the boat sails. In practice the process looks like this:

1. The team watches the forecast in the days before your wedding.
2. If anything looks marginal, they message you on WhatsApp the day before with the options.
3. On the day, the captain makes the final decision at the marina based on what the water is doing, not what the app said.
4. Once underway, the captain adjusts the route continuously. If a stretch is uncomfortable, the boat turns toward shelter.

• A second date. Know which weekend you could move to before you need it, and tell the team so they can pencil it.
