House Boat Weddings in Abu Dhabi: Why a Flat Deck Wins for Ceremonies

A house boat wins for a wedding ceremony because it gives you what a motor yacht cannot: one flat, wide, level deck with no steps, no narrow side passages and no sloping bow, so an aisle, an arch and rows of guests fit the way they would on land. Seven of the thirteen boats in our Abu Dhabi fleet are house boats, from Marina Villa at 15 guests to House Boat Luxury M1 and M2 at 40, and every one of them has a full-width saloon behind glass as a second ceremony space if the afternoon is hot. This guide explains what a house boat actually is, how the ceremony geometry works on one, and which house boat to choose for your guest count.

What a house boat is, and what it is not

A house boat is a wide, box-shaped hull with a living space built across its full beam and an open deck on top. It cruises at a gentle pace with its own captain and crew, departs from Yas Marina or Al Bateen Marina like the rest of the fleet, and follows the same routes past the Corniche, Emirates Palace and Lulu Island. What it does not do is plane across open water like a motor yacht. For a wedding that is not a loss. You are not crossing anywhere; you are looking for calm water, a backdrop and a steady floor.

The differences that matter for a ceremony:

• Width. A house boat is roughly rectangular, so the deck is usable from rail to rail. A yacht narrows sharply toward the bow.
• Level floor. No steps between the saloon and the deck, no raised sunpad, no companionway. Guests in long dresses and older relatives move freely.
• Glass saloon. The main-deck saloon is walled in glass, so the view stays even if the ceremony moves inside.
• Steadiness. The wide hull barely rolls at anchor. A glass of water on the cake table stays still.
• Headroom. Ceilings on the main deck are full height, so a floral arch stands tall inside as well as out.

The ceremony geometry: aisle, arch and rows

The reason a flat deck wins is simply that the ceremony pieces fit. Here is how the layout works on a house boat, with the decoration included in the package price and set by our team before you board.

The aisle

On the upper deck the aisle runs the length of the boat, from the stairhead to the arch at the bow end, which gives a walk of several metres with guests on both sides. On a yacht the equivalent walk is often a curve around a sunpad. Inside the saloon the aisle runs between the two rows of sofas, with a white runner and low candles either side, and the arch stands in front of the glass doors so the water is behind the couple. The arch

A floral arch needs a flat footing and something to secure to. On a house boat it stands on the deck against the forward rail, tied to the rail posts, and it reads full-height in photographs. The rows

Guests can be seated in two blocks of chairs facing the arch, exactly as in a garden. On the largest house boats that is up to around twenty seated with the rest standing at the rail. On the smaller ones, everyone stands in a horseshoe and the ceremony is over before anyone tires.

Two ceremony spaces on one boat

Every house boat gives you an outdoor deck and an indoor saloon, and the choice can be made on the day. From November to March the open upper deck is the obvious place, with the skyline or the Emirates Palace shoreline behind you. In the warmer months the saloon is air-conditioned, glass-walled and just as photogenic once it is dressed. The crew move the arch and the runner between the two in a few minutes, so a hot afternoon does not change the plan; it changes the room.

Photographs and the flat deck

Photographers prefer house boats for the same reasons couples do. The flat upper deck lets them step back far enough to frame the whole ceremony with the water behind. The wide rail lines make clean symmetrical compositions. The glass saloon lets them shoot the vows from outside looking in, with the couple lit and the skyline reflected. And there is a second level to climb for an overhead of the aisle, which is the single most shared photograph from a boat wedding.

The seven house boats, by guest count

• Marina Villa, 15 guests. A timber-clad house boat with a rooftop deck; the most intimate of the seven.
• Haya House Boat, 20 guests. A shaded upper deck with string lights and artificial grass, the easiest deck of all to lay an aisle on.
• 90 Ft Saadiyat House Boat, 20 guests. Long and low, with a glass saloon and open top deck; suited to a Saadiyat and Louvre Abu Dhabi route.
• King House Boat, 30 guests. Two decks, a shaded upper level and a warm wood-panelled lounge for the reception after the vows.
• Miss Kim House Boat, 30 guests, three-hour minimum. The saloon dresses like a chapel: long, symmetrical, glass at the end. Our first recommendation for a couple who want the ceremony indoors with a view.
• House Boat Luxury M1, 40 guests. A wide covered main deck and open top; for a ceremony and a full reception on one boat.

What you give up, honestly

A house boat is not a yacht, and a few couples want the yacht profile in their photographs: the raked bow, the flybridge, the wake. Frequently asked questions

Is a house boat steady enough for the ring exchange?

At anchor in the sheltered water between the Corniche and Lulu Island a house boat barely moves. The captain chooses the anchorage on the day, and the crew will tell you when the boat is settled before the processional starts.

Can we hold the ceremony while cruising?

Yes, at slow speed in calm water. Most couples prefer to anchor for the vows so the backdrop stays fixed for the photographs, then cruise for the reception.

Can the arch stand on the open upper deck?

Yes. It is tied to the rail posts and our team checks it against the wind forecast on the morning of the wedding. On a gusty day it moves into the saloon doorway.

Do the house boats have bathrooms?
