Wedding Decoration on a Yacht: Floral Arches, Aisles and Lighting That Work at Sea

Wedding decoration on a yacht has to be built for three things a ballroom never faces: wind, movement and salt air. A floral arch that would stand freely in a garden needs to be tied to the rail; an aisle runner that lies flat on a carpet lifts off a deck in the first gust; a candle that burns all evening in a hall goes out, or worse, in the open air. Our team dresses every wedding boat before the guests board, and the decoration is part of the package price, so this guide is less about what to buy and more about what works at sea, so you can choose a look that will still be standing at the vows.

What the package decoration covers

The wedding package on every boat in the fleet includes the decoration and the cake as a single supplement on top of the hourly rate. In practice the decoration is:

  • A floral arch or backdrop at the ceremony position.
  • An aisle runner with florals or candles along its edges.
  • Florals on the main tables and the cake table.
  • Draped fabric where the boat's structure allows it.
  • String lights and lanterns for the evening.
  • A sign or the couple's names at the entrance or the arch.

Colours, flowers and style are agreed with you on WhatsApp in advance. The full description is on the yacht decoration page; this article explains the reasoning behind how it is built.

The floral arch: weight, footing and the wind

The arch is the piece most likely to fail at sea if it is treated like a land arch. Three rules govern how we build it:

  1. It is tied, never freestanding. On the open deck the arch is secured to the rail posts at two or more points. In the saloon it stands in the doorway and is tied to the frame. A freestanding arch with a weighted base will still rock when the boat moves.
  2. It is built low and wide rather than tall and narrow. A tall arch catches wind like a sail. A wider, lower arch, or a half-moon backdrop, gives the same frame in photographs and stays put.
  3. Florals are wired, not tucked. Every stem is wired to the frame so nothing lifts out in a gust, and any loose greenery is trimmed before the boat leaves the berth.

On a gusty day the team moves the arch from the deck to the saloon doorway, where the water is still behind the couple and the wind is not. The captain's call on the morning of the wedding decides which.

The aisle: runners, petals and what stays down

A deck is not a carpet. Teak, fibreglass and artificial grass each need the runner handled differently, and the aim is the same: nothing lifts, nothing slides under a heel.

  • The runner is taped along its full length, not just at the ends, with tape that comes off the deck cleanly.
  • On artificial-grass decks, as on Haya House Boat and the King House Boat, the runner is pinned into the grass, which holds better than tape.
  • Petals along the aisle are placed in low trays or glass rather than scattered, because scattered petals blow into the water within minutes and make the deck slippery.
  • Nothing loose is used that could go overboard: no confetti, no loose ribbon, no paper.
  • Candles along the aisle are battery candles in glass, which look identical in photographs and do not go out.

Lighting that works on the water

A wedding that runs into blue hour and beyond needs lighting, and open flame on a moving boat with fabric and dresses nearby is not it. What we use:

  • String lights along the rails and under the bimini or canopy. They are the single most effective decoration on a boat at night and they read beautifully in photographs from the water.
  • Battery candles and lanterns on tables, along the aisle and on the stairs. Warm-toned, so faces are flattered.
  • The boat's own lighting, which on most of the fleet includes deck lighting and, on several boats, coloured hull lighting that the crew can set to white or warm for a wedding.
  • A lit backdrop at the arch for the ceremony after dark, so the couple is not lost against a black sky.

Lighting is set before boarding, tested at the berth, and the crew switch from daylight to evening settings as the sun goes.

Fabric and draping

Draped fabric softens a boat's hard lines and is the quickest way to make a deck look like a wedding. It is also the element most affected by wind, so it is used where the structure holds it: along the underside of the bimini or canopy, at the saloon doorway, and behind the cake table inside. Long free-hanging drapes on the open deck are avoided, and anything that is used outdoors is tied at top and bottom.

Colours that photograph on a white boat

Almost every boat in the fleet is white, with cream or beige interiors, and the light on the water is bright. This changes which colours work:

  • White on white disappears. An all-white scheme reads as nothing in daylight photographs. Add greenery, blush, sand or a single accent colour so the arch separates from the boat.
  • Deep colours hold up. Burgundy, navy, emerald and terracotta look rich against white fibreglass and gold in the evening light.
  • Gold and brass warm everything. Gold candle holders, gold-rimmed glass and brass lanterns pick up the sunset.
  • Greenery does the most work. Eucalyptus and ruscus survive heat and salt better than most blooms, and they give the arch its shape.

The setup timeline

  1. Two days before: final colours and arch style confirmed on WhatsApp.
  2. The morning of the wedding: the team checks the wind forecast with the captain and decides deck or saloon for the arch.
  3. Two to three hours before boarding: the team dresses the boat at the berth, arch first, then aisle, then tables, then lighting.
  4. Thirty minutes before boarding: everything is tied, taped, pinned and tested. The photographer can shoot the empty dressed deck.
  5. After the return: the team removes everything.

Boats that dress well

  • Princess Yacht, 25 guests. The aft deck takes an arch tied to the stern rail with the wake behind, and the flybridge bimini carries string lights and draping.
  • Haya House Boat, 20 guests. A canopied upper deck already strung with lights and floored with artificial grass; the runner pins straight in.
  • Miss Kim House Boat, 30 guests. A long, symmetrical saloon with glass at the end: the arch stands in the doorway, drapes hang from the ceiling and the aisle runs the length of the room.

Frequently asked questions

Can we bring our own decorator?

The package already includes the decoration, so an outside decorator duplicates what is paid for. If you have specific pieces, such as a family heirloom or a personalised sign, tell us and the team will place them.

Can we have real candles?

Not on the open deck. Inside the saloon, a small number of real candles in tall glass on a stable table can be agreed with the crew, but battery candles are used along the aisle and on the rails.

What happens to the decoration if the ceremony moves inside?

The arch, runner and candles move with it. The team plans both layouts in advance, so the change takes minutes and nothing is lost.

Can the decoration match a cake design?

Yes, and it should. The cake is part of the same package; the colours agreed for the arch and tables are shared with the cake designer. See the custom cake page.
